Reality Unit

A black and white AR marker several metres across covers a concrete pillar under Skanstullsbron at night, above a dark stairway and the lit market stalls and stage of Trädgården.

Verklig-enheten, the Reality Unit: a crew contracted to turn Stockholm into an augmented-first city, starting with one pillar of Skanstullsbron.

For the Gather festival in September 2019, Maria Kling, Onur Yuksel and I arrived at Trädgården, the club garden under the bridge, as the unit: matching boiler suits and everything a work crew needs, wheat paste, brushes, ladders, fika and a thermos. Over two days we pasted a black and white AR marker, a few metres across and printed on dozens of sheets, onto the pillar above the stairs, finishing on the festival's first day while explaining to visitors what it was for. Pontus Berg Ekman filmed the work.

The marker laid out on the floor of an empty classroom, its black frame, stripes and QR code assembled from many printed sheets.
A crew member in red brushes paste over the black stripes of the marker while another in black checks a sheet at the foot of the pillar.

No app was needed. The QR code in the marker opened a web page, and with the camera pointed at the pillar a door opened in the concrete onto another place: a sunset, a rainforest, fire, drifting clouds, chosen at random from eleven films. It ran in the phone's browser, built with A-Frame and Jerome Etienne's AR.js. Less steady than an app, but open to anyone with a phone.

Seen over a shoulder, a phone held up to the marker on the pillar shows the marker on its screen.

On 30 September we came back, scraped the marker off the pillar and threw it in the bin.

A crew member on the stairs tears the last strips of the marker from the pillar, paper piled on the stairs below.
A crew member with blue hair stuffs the torn marker into a rubbish bin beside a road.

The piece runs again, restored from my Glitch archive: open reality-unit.jonasjohansson.se on a phone and point it at the marker.

The finished marker on the bridge pillar in daylight, above the wide wooden stairs of Trädgården.
